As an artist, I integrate acrylic painting with meticulously hand-sewn seed beads on stretched canvas, using my self-developed medium, Acrybead™. My upbringing in Oklahoma as well as living and performing in New York City for 14 years profoundly influence my artistic practice. Inspired by the resilience of nature and the energy of urban life, my work challenges and reshapes perceptions of First American art. By incorporating both Mvskoke and machine languages, I create a fusion reflecting the complexity of contemporary Native identity.
Drawing from my Mvskoke culture and experiences in NYC's artistic landscape, my work is deeply rooted in the dynamic exchange between performer and audience. Each piece is designed to provoke thought, elicit personal connections, and invite the viewer into a layered, ongoing conversation through hidden messages, binary codes, and symbolic motifs.
The vivid depictions of flora and fauna, while initially appearing cheerfully beautiful, conceal deeper layers of conceptualized meaning. A vibrant bloom might initially appear as a joyful representation of nature but reveal complex emotions upon closer inspection. The central throat of a flower might echo architectural elements, merging organic forms with urban precision.
My artistic endeavors are underpinned by the pursuit of innovation and evolution, seeking to confront prevalent stereotypes and resistance to change within the Native American art market and the broader artistic landscape. I firmly believe that art must continuously evolve to maintain its impact, and my Acrybead™ technique embodies this philosophy, enabling me to honor traditional forms while embracing innovative practices and interweaving elaborate narratives into my creations.
By pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques and addressing contemporary themes, I strive to create art that stands as a testament to the enduring power of evolution and the importance of continual artistic innovation in preserving and advancing our culture.
